The PPL(H) licence enables you to act as pilot in command of a helicopter privately, carrying non-fare paying passengers.

This requires a minimum of 50 hours of flight training, including at least 20 hours dual instruction with an instructor and 15 hours solo flight time. The initial 15 to 25 hours focuses on basic flight exercises and learning to safely operate the helicopter, leading up to your first solo flight. After gaining confidence through solo flying, training progresses to advanced exercises including 5 hours of mountain flying and 10 hours of cross-country navigation.

In addition to flight training, students must pass six theory exams covering air law, meteorology, navigation, helicopter performance and technology, flight radio, and human factors. A spoken English assessment is also required. Theory study is self-directed, however we also offer recommended ground theory courses and structured study options to support students through the exam process.

A CPL(H) licence allows you to act as pilot in command of commercial helicopter operations. Unlike a Private Pilot Licence, it is a professional qualification, meaning you can get paid to fly!

A minimum of 150 flight hours is required, including at least 35 hours of solo flying. Training builds on PPL(H) skills but to a higher standard and across a wider range of operational and environmental conditions. This also includes a minimum of 10 hours of sling (external load) training.

Of the additional 100 hours beyond the PPL(H) requirement, students undertake advanced instruction tailored to their progress and ability, which may include advanced mountain flying, external load operations, type ratings, and practical operational flying experience.

Six CPL(H) theory examinations must also be completed, covering advanced aviation law, meteorology, navigation, helicopter principles of flight, helicopter systems and technology, and human factors.

Our Flight Instructor Rating course is designed for qualified commercial pilots looking to take the next step in their aviation career by becoming a helicopter flight instructor. The training focuses on developing advanced instructional techniques, enhanced flight safety awareness, and a strong understanding of teaching theory and learning principles.

To be eligible for this course, candidates must have completed an approved instructional techniques course.

Advanced Training, Licence Conversions & Type Ratings are available through PureHeli to support pilots expanding their skills or transitioning between aircraft. Training is tailored to individual experience levels and operational goals, including advanced mountain flying, sling (external load) operations, and aircraft type ratings. Licence conversion pathways are also available to assist qualified pilots in meeting New Zealand requirements and progressing into local operations.
